Introducing The Border Hop Beer Co. Grandaddy Mimm's Debut Line of Beers - HUGE News For This Georgia Distillery
Jack Mimmâs McClure was a law-breaking SOB that without his moonshine recipes weâd be SOL.
But this outlaw was more than a moonshiner, he was a businessman. And well, that part was illegal tooâŠ
Back in the 1940s, The Border Hop was a good ole beer joint (with more than just beer in the back roomâŠ)
Hear from Jack Mimmâs McClureâs grandson and GDM founder Tommy Townsend as he shares a bit on the Border Hop and how heâs honoring this piece of history by debuting a new drink line at Grandaddy Mimmâs.
Border Hop Beer Co. will be pouring by the glass at Grandaddy Mimmâs starting July 29th!
âThe beer joint was a real good local watering hole where folks would gamble all their coins on illegal slot machines, spin records on the Victrola record player, play tunes on the illegal jukebox (âmusic machinesâ were outlawed back then), and most importantly, get their hands on Mimmâs bootlegged moonshine.
Funny enough, Mimm never had a run-in with the law when it came to his shine and liquor, but it was possession of the slot machines and jukebox at the Border Hop that got him in trouble for a time.â
Next time you visit our Distillery in Blairsville, Georgia, the slot machine and record player in the corner may get your attention. These are from the original Border Hop and still working today!
You Heard Right - Beer Is Here!
Before we tell you what⊠read just a few sentences about why. Itâs short.
What excites us about having beers on tap is that GDM further becomes a place where we can make a drink everybody loves. We work really hard ⊠and real f***ing early to make moonshine a way we hope makes a once scary spirit, an approachable cocktail option for the at-home drinker thatâs easy to sip, stir, and slurpâŠ
But beer is a bit of a softer entry point for most and has a broader appeal thatâs always been a piece of Mimmâs history. So, as we strive to keep our barstools open to all, now everyone who walks in to make an ordinary day something more memorable has a drink they can enjoy.
So Whatâs On Tap with the Border Hop Beer Co.?
Hazy Citrus IPA (6.4% ABV) - A hoppy, brighter medium-bodied IPA with a golden color and citrus aroma.
Pilsner (5.1% ABV) - A sweet malty flavor balanced with a soft bitterness. This medium-bodied lager has an herbal aroma.
Summer Wheat Ale (4.9% ABV) - A smooth drinking ale perfected with an orange slice to compliment the hint of spice and citrus-bodied brew. Note the subtle aromas of vanilla.
Yâall know everything we do is a nod to our familyâs history in these mountains and a love for the great people of Union County and Blairsville.
If youâve been in the distillery, youâve seen the original slot machine and record player from The Border Hop on display along with jugs and barrels and other knick knacks that all have their own story to tell.
âThe Border Hop attracted all sorts of folks traveling through North Georgia. We hope this new drink will do the same and a bunch of folks want to try one of our three beer offerings.â
Mimm himself never was much of a musician, but he ran with the best of em. Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs would come through to play shows and hang with Jack at the Border Hop.
They would come home with Mimm and stay drunk for two or three days before he'd have to run them off.
